I want to become a dental hygienist but work full time. Is it better to become an assistant first?

I work full time and have been looking at two different online programs for a dental assistant but I know that is much different than a hygienist but I wanted to start somewhere. Is that a good idea or should I start the schooling for a hygienist?

It is really up to you. Whether you would like to work as an assistant or as a hygienist. You do not have to go through the assisting program before you go through the hygiene program. I did not choose to go through the assisting program before I went into the hygiene program, and I am glad I didn’t. Assisting isn’t my thing though – and some people really enjoy it – I am just not one of those people. Full time for a hygienist is generally 4 to 4.5 days per week. Good luck. Both great fields!

  1. Yes. The more school = the better position. I suggest to become an assistant first. Have some experience on you. The better schooling and experience you have, the better to have your good career. =] good luck.
